Biographical Material

I received my B.Eng., M.Eng., and Dr.Eng. in 1991, 1993, and 1996, respectively, from Toyohashi University of Technology. During 1996-2002, I have been a researcher at ATR Research Laboratories. During 2002-2020, I have been an associate professor at Department of Electrical Engineering, Nagaoka University of Technology. In 1998, I have also been a visiting researcher at National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition of Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, P.R.China. I have also been a part-time lecturer in Toyohashi University of Technology during 2002-2006.

In the ATR project, I was responsible for projects on Japanese-Korean-Japanese MT and Japanese-Chinese MT, which utilize example-based TDMT (Transfer-Driven Machine Translation) methodology. I have also joined a project on developing Japanese-English, Japanese-German, Japanese-Chinese MT in its ellipsis resolution module. When I was in the ATR-SLT project, I am in charge of Japanese-Chinese-Japanese MT construction. I have also engaged to basic research on text summarization and paraphrasing since 1990.

In the university, I have supervised around 74 students in total, in which 28 students finished master's course as of March 2017.

During 2016-2020, I have been a director (= a governing board member) of the association for natural language processing (ANLP), Japan. I was also the general chair of the 2018 annual meeting of ANLP (NLP2018). During 2018-2020, I have also been a director of Asia-Pacific Association for Machine Translation (AAMT).

Research Interests

The topics below are my personal interests and are not as same as the research topics in my lab.

  • Japanese text transformation, i.e., simplification, paraphrasing and summarization
  • language resource construction (particularly, describing semantic knowledge and common sense)
  • other language processing, such as Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysian and so on. We are also doing Tigrinya language processing which is the only lab in the world.
  • NLP for assisting Japanese language learning/teaching
  • NLP for solving real-world problems/demands, not for writing papers.
